Swindon Festival of Literature

Welcome to the twenty-first
Swindon Festival of Literature!

Our passion and founding spirit is rooted in love of the word, good reading, exploratory talk, finding out about things, making connections, and the notion that life is for learning, and, where possible, pleasure.

This is a festival that brings people together in Swindon to enjoy things well-thought, well-written, and well-said.

Now that we are twenty-one, we are meant to be properly grown up. This means that we can not only have fun but also be serious and idealistic about things that matter in our everyday lives.

We intend to do just that, with adventurous authors, terrific talks, delightful discussion, wonderful workshops, and excellent entertainment.

If you like the idea of Literature celebrated this way, please read on. We want this celebration of good writing and clear thinking to connect with the texture of life as we know it, today, yesterday, and in days to come, with all its challenges, difficulties, and delights.

This is the way it is at the Swindon Festival of Literature. Writers meet readers and readers meet writers. We talk, we listen, we think, we drink a little, and also like to laugh. As a result, enjoyable, interesting, challenging, unpredictable, funny, and even memorable things happen.

In its attempt to lure you along, this year’s Festival includes novelists, poets, philosophers, storytellers, historians, columnists, adventurers, broadcasters, artists, and activists.

For the full at-a-glance Festival diary, turn to the centre pages of this programme.

And then, mark your own diary, so that from 5th to 17th May you know where to be, if you want to be meeting, greeting, and listening to writers, thinkers, entertainers, and fellow Festival followers.

Please read on, and come along.
