Anti-Smoking Poster Competition - 2013

Date: 7 Feb 2013

Dragon to ‘Smoke Out’ Winner in Pupils Anti-Smoking Poster Competition

Vishnee Sauntoo, the Campaign Manager for No Smoking Day, run by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), is encouraging your school to get your pupils involved in their primary school poster competition this year.  All you have to do is:

For the 30th year of the no smoking day campaign we are asking children What would you do if you were given £49? This is the amount of money the average smoker spends on cigarettes per week and this cost could be the difference between a child starting smoking or saying ‘no’ or a parent making the decision to quit.

Around 200,000 children and young people in England take up smoking each year (1), so get involved with No Smoking Day campaign this year and help your children learn about the risks?

You could also raise the profile of your school in the local media, all it takes is 3 simple steps:

1)   Plan your lesson and ask pupils (individuals or groups between the ages of six and twelve) to think about what they would do if they were given £49. Your pupils can then get creative and learn about where that money goes in the lives of smokers.

2)   Next, fill out the template press release (available online at nosmokingday.org.uk/education/). This explains that your school is getting involved in the poster competition for No Smoking Day.

3)   Finally, get someone to contact your local media. Ring and speak to the newsdesk at your local newspaper or a producer at your local radio station, tell them about your activity and send them your press release. You could even arrange for them to come down to the school to take a photo of everyone holding their posters.

After all this, please don’t forget to submit your entries before February 27th to: ‘No Smoking Day Competition’, Freepost Plus RSAC-ZHER-YTZL, British Heart Foundation, Greater London House, Hampstead Road, London, NW1 7AW.
