Building A Generation of Life-Savers

Winter 2010

New first aid resource for primary schools coming soon!

We are launching a free first aid teaching resource for primary teachers and other educators in the New Year. Life. Live it. First aid education for children has been specially designed to enable all teachers to teach first aid to 5 – 11 year olds, no previous experience of first aid is required. The online resource will be completely free and will be available from the British Red Cross website.

The main themes are:

> Stay Safe - how to assess risk and keep safe

> How to Save Lives - simple first aid skills

> Emergency Action - how to get help and make a 999 call.

Life. Live it. First aid education for children caters for students of all abilities and learning styles. The emphasis is on learning first aid through a variety of approaches: video, interactive activities, discussion, quizzes, drama, practical activities, drawing and more.

Curriculum links for all UK curricula are included.

MD Vallelly, Principal at Bocombra Primary School in Northern Ireland has been given a preview of the resource and was very impressed,“I’ve been looking for an appropriate vehicle to introduce first aid to the whole school at the correct level and this resource would do this superbly.”

Life. Live it. First aid education for children does not aim to provide information on the full range of first aid techniques (such as resuscitation); instead it covers a smaller number of key actions for dealing with a range of situations.  Using the resource, 5-11 year olds will be able to learn about keeping safe and getting help, calling 999, dealing with burns and nosebleeds, supporting others, and keeping calm and controlling emotions.

The materials for 7-11 year olds are more extensive covering the treatment of choking, bad bleeds, checking for breathing, helping an unconscious person who is breathing, broken bones, asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

Price changes

Many of our education resources will be slightly increasing in price from January 2011 to reflect the increase in VAT. The Life. Live it. First aid education kit for young people CD ROM only will be £81 and the full kit including practical materials will be £138.
