Road Safety Week 2010, 22 – 28 November There’s just under a week to go to Road Safety Week 2010. Organised by the road safety charity Brake, this year’s theme is Kids Say: SLOW DOWN. Latest road casualty statistics published by DFT On 4 November, the Department for Transport published Reported Road Casualties in Great Britain: Quarterly Provisional Estimates: Q2 2010. RoSPA extends its blind cord campaign with 60,000 free safety packs Last month, RoSPA announced that it would be expanding its national campaign by launching new web content and distributing 60,000 safety packs free of charge to anyone who requests one. Well done and thank-you to Lyndon Atherton! You may remember the Atherton family from earlier this year - Lou and Lyndon Atherton and their children Amelia, Davy and baby Adelaide. Davy Atherton was scalded in the bath. Davy is now, we’re pleased to report, fine and a very happy three-year-old boy. Funding for Child Safety Education Coalition (CSEC) to cease From 31 December this year, government funding for the Child Safety Education Coalition will be withdrawn as a result of the significant savings which the Department for Education (DfE) is being required to make. Could you help children stay safe around dogs? In 2008, 400 children under the age of five were admitted to hospital after being bitten by a dog. As we’ve mentioned before, the Blue Dog Guide is a software package which teaches parents and children about how to stay safe around dogs. Birmingham Children’s Hospital needs your help Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) is hoping to secure funding to launch a safety programme in 2011 focusing on preventing burns to children from hair straighteners. In preparation, it is looking for examples of similar programmes around the country. BSI British Standards appeal for volunteer consultants The BSI’s Consumer and Public Interest Network (CPIU) is looking for people to join it and contribute to its work in promoting product safety. Volunteers should demonstrate a commitment to the principles of consumer involvement and want products and services for your family to be safe, accessible, secure and sustainable. |
