Food Standards Agency Schools and Young Persons Related Work

– Updated December 2009

Education programmes: 

Kick and Cook:

§         A 5-week pilot programme being taken forward by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation in partnership with Haringey 6th Form Centre, Kudos Hospitality and the clubs local Sainsbury’s. The aim of the programme is to enable children aged 11-14 to learn about diet and health and food safety through practical cooking in the clubs stadium kitchens and learning zone. 

Something to Chew on:

§         Something to Chew On’ with the Manchester United Foundation – aimed at 7-8 yrs is a 10 week programme to help increase primary school aged children’s knowledge and skills around the healthy eating and food safety competency themes through physical activity.  

Premier Rugby Something to Chew On:

§        The Agency is funding a rugby version of Something to Chew On with Premier Rugby. The programme will be delivered nationally through the community programmes of each of the rugby clubs in the Guinness Premiership, of which there are a number in the South West.  

§         This programme will be fully launched in the new year however some clubs have started delivering the programme already. 

Small Steps 4 Life:

§         Smallsteps4life is part of the London 2012 Inspire programme and is the FSA’s spearhead programme for the healthy active lifestyle strand of the London 2012 domestic education programme.  

§         The smallsteps4life programme will promote and encourage young people, across the UK, to take up achievable challenges across the themes of healthy eating, getting active and feeling good. The website will help to maximise accessibility and will offer an engaging and interactive rich experience for schools and young people. 

 §         The FSA leads on smallsteps4life with support from partners including DH National Healthy Schools Programme, Department for Children, Schools and Families, School Food Trust, Youth Sport Trust, National Children’s Bureau, DH C4Life and London 2012 organisers. The FSA is working across the UK to ensure that smallsteps4life is a programme that all UK schools can gain access to with support in their localities.   

§         It is envisaged that the programme will have 4 key elements – Digital solution in the form of smallsteps4life website; young people’s voice work; local engagement programme; and a suite of hard copy resources for schools.  

Launch:

§         Soft launch of the website in October 2009  

§         The soft launch will provide a taster to raise awareness and enable schools and stakeholders with an experience to encourage them to sign up and to start them thinking about how they can take their Small steps journey.  

§         Full launch in early spring 2010.   

Resources: 

Food route: 

§         The Food Route resources are the 'young people' facing materials that will help young people to map out their food education journey. This work contributes towards fulfilling our commitment to developing a young persons version of the food competences.  

§         A full launch of the resources will take place in September/October this year 

Planet Cook: 

§         The Agency has provided Platinum films with a grant to produce an interactive web based resources that delivers learning about the food competences for 7-9 and 11-12 year olds and based on the ethos of their TV programme, Planet Cook. 

§         The web resource being developed is based on an island that children can explore. The island is split into four zones, each of which represents a different competency. Children and young people will learn through a mixture of online games/activities and info bites that will pop up periodically. They will either be able to explore the site themselves or the will be taken through it by a range of teacher lead activities. 

§         It is aimed to launch the activities for the youngest age group in September 09.  

Dish it up 

Dish it up is an interactive CD-ROM developed to help teachers make learning about food fun for young people (11 to 12 years). Informed by pupils’ feedback, the resource brings the subject of food and making healthier food choices to life in an enjoyable and fun way.The CD-ROM includes a virtual journey split into three episodes, activities that cover hygiene hazards and body image and a series of interactive games. Teacher's notes are also included.

myfoodspace

Myfoodspace is an interactive DVD-ROM developed to help teachers engage young people (9 to 11 years) in learning about food labelling within the background of healthy eating and a balanced diet.The DVD-ROM includes the myfoodspace interactive, a teachers’ centre with teacher's notes, lesson plans, pupil worksheets, slide presentations and professional development videos. Designed to be both modern and engaging, pupils can meet young role-models and learn how to make safe, healthy choices about food.

Other activity: 

Food Competency review:

§         A review of the Agency’s framework is due to be completed by the end of March 2010. This review will focus on who is using the food competency framework and how it is being used rather than looking in detail at the food competency statements. Healthy Schools Coordinators will wish to note that the review will include an online survey which we will try to cascade via the regional teams in the FSA. Further updates will keep you informed on the progress of all the resources discussed.
