Global Children's Challenge - 2011

Following the success of the world’s first Global Children’s Challenge last year, it’s my pleasure to let you know that the 2011 Global Children’s Challenge will start on the 15th September 2011, and so please be sure to inform the primary schools in your region that applications are now open at www.gccjunior.org. Some of your fellow Healthy Schools Co-Ordinators had a fantastic response from the schools in their areas last year and we hope to build on that enthusiasm in 2011!

Last year, this free of charge initiative helped over 90,000 primary/elementary school children from around the world to become more active and healthy. Supported by sporting legends including Cathy Freeman OAM, Herb Elliot AC MBE and Colin Jackson CBE, the Global Children’s Challenge aims to instil in children a lifetime habit of increased daily exercise. This is achieved in a truly unique & engaging way – by challenging classes to undertake a virtual walk around the world in 50 days!

A quick overview:

- The 50 day challenge starts on Thursday, 15th September and finishes Thursday, 3rd November 2011.

-  Open to any class in the last 3 years of primary/elementary/junior school (typically aged 8-12).

- Every child is provided a free pedometer to measure their activity levels.

- Each class participates as one team.

- As well as improving the health of participating children, the Global Children’s Challenge will support other areas of the curriculum including Geography, Maths & Science as well increasing their Global awareness.

-  It is completely free! The event is proudly supported by the Global Corporate Challenge® (GCC).

This year’s Global Children’s Challenge will be host to 120,000 school children from over 80 countries around the world, all walking their way to a healthier future. Students will record their daily activity levels using a GCC pedometer, aiming for 15,000 steps each day. Working together as a class, their total steps are combined, converted to kms, and plotted along their virtual journey around the world. Teachers and students can track their daily progress around the world on the GCC award winning website – www.gccjunior.org. The more active the class, the further they will progress, learning about different countries, cities and cultures along the way.

As this is totally free of charge, we recommend that you advise the schools in your area to apply as early as possible. You can find a downloadable eflyer at  http://www.gccjunior.org/resources if you wish to send some further information on to the teachers at the schools in your area. If you, or any of the teachers wish to see a summary of last year’s Global Children’s Challenge results, please let me know and I will gladly send one over.

If you have any queries regarding the event, please feel free to get in touch with me directly, I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Emily
