Teenagers to reap Swindoncard and Leisure Passport benefits for longer

Young people under the age of 19 will be able to benefit from a whole range of discounted leisure activities next month following changes to the Junior Swindoncard and Leisure Passport.

Junior Swindoncards and Leisure Passports were previously only available to those under the age of 16, but Swindon Borough Council’s drive to get more young people active will see the initiative rolled out to under 19s from January.

The discount cards have been extended to make leisure activities affordable for students still in further education and those who have just started employment.

A Junior Swindoncard gives up to 50% discounts on leisure activities at Swindon Borough Council-owned leisure centres, while the Junior Leisure Passport gives all inclusive use of gym, swimming, fitness classes, climbing and ice skating at a discounted monthly rate.

And new customers joining the Junior Leisure Passport scheme in January and February will get a free joining pack worth £50, which includes a water bottle, towel, drawstring bag and a selection of money-off vouchers for various leisure activities.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Corporate Services, said: “We want to keep as many of our young people active for longer, which is why we have extended the Junior Swindoncard and Leisure Passport scheme.

“We found that many young people who were no longer eligible for the Junior Swindoncard and Leisure Passport stopped using our leisure centres because they could no longer afford it, particularly if they were still in full-time education.

“The new age limit will ensure that many of our students and those who may have just started work, continue to benefit from the leisure discounts they enjoyed while at school.”
