The British Red Cross

The British Red Cross has been campaigning for all school children to learn the basic first aid skills as part of their curriculum. With its inclusion in the PSHE curriculum, we have produced an educational resource called Life. Live it.. It has been designed to enable all teachers to teach the basic, simple, key first aid messages, whether or not they have previous experience. I have been employed to support schools and teachers in introducing first aid into their curriculum, in a way to suit their particular school's requirements.

In the past I have been a partnership manager and year head in a comprehensive school so I am aware of the pressures on teachers and their reluctance, in some cases, to teach first aid. I now run workshops, give presentations in network meetings and am involved in training peer educators to teach first aid. This is free, as part of the campaign.

In February I worked with Churchfields School. I have attached the case study submitted to the SSAT website. Now I tend to work more with groups of teachers rather than individual schools.

The Life. Live it. educational resource contains a CD rom with:
- flexible schemes of work
- adaptable lesson plans
- power point presentations including videos
- materials for groupwork activities
- interactive quiz
- assessment of risk & decision making activities

Also some practical materials are included like a mannikin. Although there is a cost to this there are free down loadable resources and free materials that I give out at workshops. Further details are available at www.redcross.org.uk/lifeliveit

Regards.
