Plainpacksprotect.co.uk

Members of the Smokefree Action Coalition have launched a new website in support of the campaign for standardised, generic packaging of tobacco products.  www.plainpacksprotect.co.uk.

Within just over a week of launching, over 1,500 people have already shown their support for the campaign. The website is being updated with new materials, but already includes:

  • Word on the street – a short video showing what the public thinks about plain packaging
  • The effects of cigarette packaging – a one page briefing explaining why plain packaging would reduce the number of children smoking
  • The tobacco industry myths exposed – a one page briefing countering the arguments against plain packaging.

What can you can do to promote plain packaging?

The government is due to launch a 3-month public consultation starting in spring 2012, on whether the UK should adopt the plain, generic packaging of tobacco products, recently adopted by the Australian government.

We need your help to promote the campaign and to help make the case with MPs, media and the public.  There are numerous ways you can help.

  • Respond to the government consultation as an organisation
  • Respond to the government consultation as an individual
  • Contact your MP
  • Helping counter tobacco industry arguments (eg. through letters to papers)
  • Write an article on plain packing for your newsletter/website
