Be the Change: what we’re doing to play our part in the fight against climate change

People and organisations across Swindon and all over the world are taking practical steps to protect what they love from climate change before it’s too late.

Our Net Zero Emissions Action Plan, which was approved by Cabinet last week, pulls together an initial set of actions to help us ensure that for all the greenhouse gases we emit, we’re removing the same amount from the atmosphere by 2030 and supporting the Borough as a whole to achieve this same ambition by 2050.

Over the last few years, we've taken significant action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including raising more than £4.2 million from the public to build solar parks with two public investment offers and progressing the Borough-wide LED street lighting programme which, once complete, will see 28,000 lights replaced by LED bulbs.

Through the Great Western Community Forest, we've also joined the national Trees for Climate programme to commit to planting a total of approximately 350ha of woodland over a five-year period - around 500,000 trees in total.

The Net Zero Emissions Action Plan will build on these initiatives and go further. Find out more about what we are doing and what we have planned on the climate change pages at Swindon.gov.uk.
