Alcohol and Other Drugs
- Did Anyone Watch Tuesday's (13.10.09) Horizon Programme? 'Do I Drink Too Much?'
If you missed it, it's well worth a view on the BBC i-player.

These are just some of the things recent delegates have said about our substance use training:
Foundation Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs:
- The best and most effective training I have even taken part in either internally or extermally in the past 20 years of employment.
- Thought I had nothing to learn around alcohol but the content, pace and delivery has made it still an interesting subject (even making me re-assess my thinking!)
Working together with parents even using some of the activities we used on the course to educate parents/empower parents to be able to speak to their children openly. Help them to build up their childs resiliance.
Advanced skills - Alcohol and Other Drugs (formerly S.U.I.T.
- Trainers had good subject knowledge and were very aware of diverse needs and gave input that was relevant to job roles.
- I will use the SUIT assessment on all the YP I am keyworking.
I gained a lot of knowledge about the different services that are accessible to young people and their families. The session was very relaxed and the lecturers approachable.
Check out the dates below - a few places are still available on all - and we look forward to seeing you soon!!
Tuesdays December 1st & 8th 2009
Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs (Foundation (substance use): 2 day event 09:30 - 16:30)
Recommended introductory training for carers, volunteers, staff and managers in the Children's Workforce on key themes, skills and research in substance use. One day focuses on alcohol and core skills and the second day on other drugs of choice; introducing valuable resources, skills and techniques to enhance your practice and boost your confidence in this area.
It is facilitated by the Healthy Schools lead for Drug and Alcohol Education and by clinical staff from U-Turn; Swindon's Young People's Substance Misuse Service. Always well evaluated and a useful foundation for further training.
NEW 4 Wednesday evenings from November 11th to December 2nd Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs (Foundation (substance use): 4 evenings 7- 9pm)
A pilot for alternative access to the 2-day foundation training (see above). Venue is New College and the material from the foundation training will be delivered over 4 evenings.
Wednesday November 4th 2009
Advanced Interventions: Alcohol and Other Drugs (previously S.U.I.T) (Advanced (substance use): 1 day event 09:30 - 16:30)
A well-evaluated introduction to the use of a locally developed assessment tool - helping to assess the effects of drug and alcohol use and guide the support and management of young people who have problems with their substance use. It includes a resource workshop where delegates can 'play' with the latest resources recommended to support drug and alcohol education with young people.
We prefer you to have attended foundation training 'Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs' prior to this event or have equivalent prior learning or experience. Do call and check- we're very flexible.
