Launch of B&NES, Swindon & Wiltshire (BSW) Asthma Friendly Schools
Date: 8 Mar 2024
Children and young people (CYP) with asthma are more likely to be absent from school than those with no health conditions. Promoting an asthma friendly environment through training and the adoption of asthma focussed policies and procedures will help reduce this absence and support CYP to be safe while they are in school.
Swindon Healthy Schools has joined the Asthma Friendly Schools programme, which is being rolled out in other parts of England. We are working with partners in B&NES and Wiltshire to support this programme across BSW.
Becoming an Asthma Friendly School is a simple, self-assessment process, open to both primary and secondary schools. Asthma Friendly Schools need to:
- Identify an Asthma Lead/Champion who has received training from Swindon’s School Nursing Team and/or accredited training via: Supporting Children's Health and Young People with Asthma (educationforhealth.org)
- Hold a register of all pupils with asthma
- Hold a personalised asthma action plan for each pupil
- Have emergency asthma kits available
- Have an asthma school policy (including emergency procedures)
Why not come and find out more? We are officially launching BSW Asthma Friendly Schools at an online event on Wednesday 8 May from 3.30-4.30pm. The launch event will include a presentation by Sebastian Gray, Consultant Paediatrician and CYP Asthma Lead for BSW Integrated Care Service.
